Project description

The challenge

For many children at Ta Ei and Sreyvibol Primary Schools, the school environment offered very little beyond the classroom itself. There was no welcoming place to gather, read, explore or simply enjoy learning together. At Ta Ei, the existing library was outdated and worn down, while Sreyvibol had no functioning library at all. For 820 children, this meant limited access to books – but also the absence of a shared space that could bring learning, curiosity and school life together.

Our solution

We transformed existing school facilities into two bright, welcoming libraries – creating much more than places to store books. With 2,000 new books, child-friendly furniture, educational games, learning materials and digital equipment, the libraries have become spaces where children can meet, read, discover and learn together. Teachers and librarians were trained to keep the libraries active, complemented by reading activities and competitions throughout the school year.

The impact

Today, the two libraries have become lively parts of everyday school life for 820 children. Students come together to read, explore and enjoy learning, while teachers actively use the new spaces as part of the learning environment. Regular reading activities and competitions help build stronger reading habits and keep the libraries active. Teachers and librarians are responsible for the daily operation and care, while BAMBOOS continues to visit the schools, monitor progress and support monthly reading activities – helping ensure the libraries remain valuable learning spaces for years to come.

Made possible by

The two libraries were made possible through the generous support of Fonden af 17-12-81, Fonden af 8. juli 1983 and VMOK Børnefond – and through strong local involvement. The schools and teachers took an active role throughout the project, children helped decorate and bring the new spaces to life, and families and the wider community have embraced the libraries. This shared commitment has created a strong sense of local pride and ownership – an important foundation for keeping the libraries active for years to come.
