Volunteer
Volunteering in Cambodia – Make a difference with BAMBOOS
Life-changing for you – and for others
Do you dream of spending your gap year – or a chapter of your life – making a real difference for others while gaining new perspective on your own?
With BAMBOOS, you as a young Dane can travel to Cambodia and become part of meaningful programs that create tangible improvements for children, youth, and families in local communities around one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting cities, Siem Reap.
What do you get out of it?
Make a difference
You’ll become an active part of our work to strengthen education, health, and living conditions in local communities. Your hands and your commitment help give children in Cambodia a better future.
Gain perspective on life
When you work with the children and take part in daily life in Cambodia, you quickly realise how much it means to help others. You become more resilient, more grateful – and richer in life experience.
Win-win
The local communities know they need help – and they welcome it. Through your efforts, you support both individuals and the community, and you become a role model for the children. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.
Practical information
Who can join?
We are looking for young Danes taking a gap year or going through a transitional phase in life – people who want to give something of themselves and receive something truly meaningful in return.
Duration
1-2 months (or longer) – with up to 5 working days per week. To create the greatest value – for the children, families, local communities, our local team, and for yourself – we recommend staying for at least one month.
Location
Our efforts are focused in one of the absolute poorest areas of Cambodia – the incredibly beautiful and authentic Siem Reap province in northwestern Cambodia, which is home to the world’s eighth wonder: the Angkor Wat temple complex.
Accommodation
You will be staying in the city of Siem Reap, with a population of around 100,000. Here, you will find a unique mix of local charm, culture, vibrant life, and a backpacker vibe. You will live either in an apartment with other volunteers or at carefully selected hotels, hostels, or guesthouses – and in the future, there will also be opportunities to stay with local families.
Ways you can make a difference

- Teaching
Support the children as an assistant teacher in English, creative subjects and sports at the local schools.
- Awareness
Actively participate in workshops and awareness projects on health, hygiene, clean water, and contraception.
- Practical Work
Help build and renovate schools and family houses.
- Team Support
Support our local team with English, IT, accounting, marketing, or HR.
- More Opportunities
In the longer term, we will open up for volunteer work at, for example, children’s hospitals, orphanages, and soup kitchens.
This is what makes BAMBOOS unique
The real deal
You will be working at public schools in areas where the need is great and resources are limited. Here, you will instantly feel the impact of your efforts.
A sustainable approach
We take responsibility. That is why we limit the number of volunteers – to ensure quality and safety for both you and the children.
Locally rooted
We have our own office in Siem Reap and a small, experienced Cambodian team of six people who know the schools, communities, and authorities inside and out.
You are in safe hands – and you will have the chance to leave your mark.
Safety and Support
Airport pickup and transport to your accommodation.
Help with booking and plenty of good advice about “everything”.
Local contact person available 24/7.
Option to arrange your own travel and stay – flexibility is key.
Safety
Cambodia is generally a safe and peaceful country to stay in. As anywhere, it’s important to use common sense and stay aware – and we’re here to support and guide you every step of the way.
Cost
- You cover your own travel, food, accommodation, and transport.
- The volunteer stay is free – it is part of our DNA.
- We ask for a one-time donation of 10,000 DKK, which goes directly to the programs. After your stay, you can help decide how the money will be used – for example, for a food project, a garden project, or a bicycle project.
Are you ready to make a difference?
We are looking for someone like you – someone who is ready to get involved, learn new things, work hard, and return home with a heart full of unforgettable experiences and lifelong memories. With BAMBOOS, you will become part of a strong and compassionate effort for Cambodia’s children and future – and a movement of young people who take action.
Share your details, and you will hear from us within 24 hours.
