The challenge
For many children in rural Cambodia, simply getting to school is a daily challenge. Many live several kilometres away and have no access to public transportation. Walking long distances in intense heat or heavy rain takes time and energy and can contribute to children arriving late, missing school or eventually dropping out. For the poorest families, buying a bicycle is simply beyond what they can afford.
Our solution
We provide bicycles to the children who need them most – but we do much more than simply hand out bikes. Together with the school, teachers and local community, our Cambodian team identifies students based on clear criteria, including distance to school, family income and circumstances, disability and risk of dropping out. We pay particular attention to girls, who are often among the most vulnerable children, and helping them stay in school and continue their education is an important priority for us. Each child and family is involved, and BAMBOOS follows the students afterwards to make sure the bicycles are being used and making a difference.
What your support makes possible
Your support can make the difference between a child going to school or not. A bicycle removes one of the most practical barriers to education for some of the poorest children in rural Cambodia, giving them the opportunity to attend school regularly, complete their education and build a better future. Every child has the right to an education – your support helps make that right a reality.
Local ownership, monitoring and sustainability
Families and students commit to taking responsibility for the bicycles, while selected teachers and older students are trained in basic maintenance and repairs. Together with the school, we monitor each student’s attendance and follow up with the student and family if needed. BAMBOOS continues to follow the project after distribution, helping ensure the bicycles remain on the road – and the children remain in school.
What it costs
You can support this project – or help us bring bicycles to children at other already identified rural schools.
Included in the price: bicycles and locks, identification and individual interviews of students and families, involvement of families and the school, agreements with recipients, distribution, basic maintenance training and ongoing monitoring and follow-up.
