Project description
The challenge
In rural areas many students cannot afford bottled water and rely on unsafe sources such as home containers or well water, which can cause stomach infections and diarrhoea. Once installed, water purification equipment is expensive to maintain, and replacement parts often exceed the schools’ limited budgets.
Our solution
We provided water towers and equipment that purify groundwater into safe drinking water at two primary schools. To keep the systems running, we established a cost-sharing agreement under which we cover 50% of the cost of replacement parts.
The impact
Nearly 2,000 students, 70 teachers and many community members benefit from clean drinking water. Health has improved, illness-related absences have fallen, and attendance and performance in class have increased.
