Project description

The challenge

Svay Thom Primary and Secondary School trains more than 1,800 students across nine grades. At that scale, the school needed a substantial expansion of both its sanitation facilities and its classroom capacity in order to keep growing sustainably.

Our solution

Under the supervision of Remo Zwick, Technical Director, and Vreni Schweizer, HR Business Partner, ten Geberit trainees built installations at the school: 10 toilets and 5 urinals. In cooperation with local construction companies, two handwashing stations and 5 new classrooms were also built. The Geberit and Kamboo teams jointly ran a comprehensive, intensive hygiene workshop covering best practices for washing hands with soap and using a toothbrush.

The impact

The school is thriving. Enrolment rates are rising and absenteeism is decreasing, early marriages of girls are on the decline, and local know-how on hygiene and waste management is growing. With this capacity expansion the school can continue its sustainable strategy, and our local team is stepping up monitoring so the new sanitation facilities keep serving thousands of children for many years to come.

Made possible by

Our heartfelt thanks go to the Geberit Group. Since 2008, Geberit apprentices have had the opportunity every year to demonstrate their team spirit and skills in a project benefiting social institutions in poorer countries, with Geberit providing the material and the learners installing it. Geberit normally selects a project partner only once, so after the renovation of Wat Roka and Arranh Reangsey primary schools in the ‘Geberit Social Project 2019’, we are very proud to have been chosen a second time. Akun!
