Teacher training and English classes
Teacher training/English classes ongoing
Project description
The challenge
Champey Primary School is the only public school from preschool to Grade 6 in its rural farming community, 55 km from Siem Reap. Its 280 students are learning in buildings that are no longer fit for purpose. The main wooden building dates from 1985 and is severely damaged by termites, leaking roofs and weakened structures. Classrooms are dark and overcrowded, with 35–45 children sharing worn and damaged furniture. When it rains, water enters the classrooms and drips onto their desks.
Our solution
We are transforming Champey into a safe and stronger learning environment, starting with six new classrooms to replace the deteriorated facilities. But the project goes beyond construction. The next phase introduces certified teacher training and additional English teaching, strengthening both teaching quality and the skills children need for their future. Alongside this, a separate 100-bicycle project and community repair workshop is helping children overcome another very practical barrier: simply getting to school. The plan is for the school to take full ownership and continue the program independently after the project period. If more time is needed to achieve this, BAMBOOS guarantees to continue the program and cover the associated costs for as long as needed.
The impact
The project will directly benefit 280 students – including 140 girls – and 10 teachers. Our ambition is not simply to build new classrooms, but to create lasting improvements in learning and school participation. Over the three-year project period, we will measure progress together with Danish impact consultancy Pluss, with targets including 30% better English results, 25% lower absence and dropout, 20% higher transition to secondary school and 20% stronger pedagogical skills among teachers. The goal is a school that is ultimately strong enough to sustain the improvements itself – giving generations of children a better foundation for education and opportunity.
Made possible by
The transformation of Champey Primary School is made possible by four CIP partners whose support funds both the new school facilities and the subsequent investment in education. The wider CIP Family Gives Back Programme is also funding 100 bicycles and a community bicycle workshop at the school, extending the partnership from better learning to better access to education. Teachers, parents and local authorities are actively involved too – from preparing the site to taking responsibility for maintaining the school – helping ensure local ownership from the very beginning.
